4POWERS Acting Workshop
Julia Roberts kept being cast in roles like the one in “Pretty Woman”. But many good looking women like her are cast in roles that don’t fully flow with their inner power or true typology. When she was finally cast as a heroine, a warrior woman in “Erin Brokovich”, she won the Oscar for best actress in 2001.
Why only nominations and no Oscars for her other roles?
We all have one of a group of four typologies that we are closest to!
Julia Roberts is closer to the hunter, warrior typology than to the fascinating woman, lover typology.
How can we make sure we develop the true inner power within us,
so that as actors we can be dynamite every time ?
We can learn about the 4POWERS
These are the four universal, human typologies. C.G. Jung called them the archetypes of the collective unconscious. We all know them from fairytales and movies.
We can identify which human typology a character is by their priorities and actions.
We can then go about learning how to authentically portrait this character based on objective observations gleaned by psychologists like C.G. Jung in thousands of therapeutic sessions.
This is a weekend workshop that will give you a deep insight into your own human typology.
You will likely reflect on who you really are and roles you have been wanting to play.
You will learn the tools to analyse a script according to a simple grid of four perspectives on life, each with their own set of concrete values and priorities.
Once you learn to see the dramatic arts through this lens, you will be able to understand the motivation of characters more quickly and be able to portray them more authentically on stage or in front of the camera. You will gain access to the soul of the characters you are studying and feel that you can “be” them rather than “play” them, understanding deeply how the conflict potential of differing priorities arise in each scene and with each piece of dialogue. Understanding the values of your character will give you “fuel” and conviction in each moment of your performance.

The 4POWERS
The 4POWERS Quiz: Which typology are you?
An introduction to the CHIEF, HUNTER, SHAMAN & ARTISAN and their more common versions known as King & Queen, Warrior & Heroine, Magician & High Priestess, Lover & Fascinating Woman.
We all know them from fairytales and movies. Here is a grid to deeply understand and use them gainfully.

Character Analysis - Building a Role
Analysing the factual events of a script, based on Constantin Stanislavski´s “Creating a Role”, we extend this approach into determining Simon Sanud´s 4POWERS typology of the character you are playing.
This gives you a whole host of knowledge that may not be easy to glean from the dialogue. It also gives you a perspective on what the writer may have tapped into unconsciously, implications that can inspire your performance.

How to Use the 4POWERS in Acting
The characteristics of the typologies each relate to an element. The CHIEF embodies the earth element, the HUNTER fire, the SHAMAN air and the ARTISAN water.
Applying these qualities in to physical movements, the psychological gesture, as Michael Chekov would put it. Learning how to allow these patterns to inform and inspire our feelings and imagination as actors.
The elements also form a basis for the rhythm of speech patterns, phrasing and tone of voice.
-
Character Scene Work
Identifying dialogue where priorities of your character conflict with those of other characters, organically electrifying the chemistry in the scene from an authentic inner conflict of the characters.
Identifying how to bridge the difference of your own typology and authentically start embodying the values of the character you are playing.

Simon Sanud

aka Simon Bjoergvin Veredon
I discovered this approach to character analysis, character building, writing or directing during my time living in an ashram in Berlin.
I had just come back to Europe after 10 years working in L.A. and Atlanta and I was taking some me-time to investigate meaning around my vocation as a writer, actor and director.
The seminar that struck me like a bolt of lightning was called “the archetypes of the soul” and was taught for personal development. Find out your soul’s archetype and learn how to heal it.
I realised quickly what a huge key this knowledge is for writing, acting and directing.
I banded together with writers, directors and actors, gave seminars on this knowledge and set out to co-create screenplays, then going on to shooting spec spots and finally shooting a spec pilot, all based on detailed knowledge of the typologies that have been observed by psychologists for over a century, but never formalised into a concrete modality for performing artists and storytellers!
As artists we all use these typologies unconsciously. We have all heard of the King, Warrior, Magician and Lover archetypes, but doesn’t it make sense to become TOTALLY conscious of the details and be able to really nail the characters we write, play or direct?

Workshop FAQs
-
C.G. Jung started to discover common archetypal figures that would appear in his patients dreams and started to play a role in their therapy and healing. He defined 12 archetypes from the ruler to the innocent to the sage to name a few. Two other psychologists, Moore and Gillette grouped these in to four more basic categories.
The 4POWERS is based on these four basic categories, which are also connected meaningfully with the four elements.
Screenwriters and directors already work with the archetypes, since they are inherently part of our human culture of storytelling.
In the 4POWERS Simon Sanud relates the most useful information about the four basic typologies in a way that is useful for character analysis and development, as well as authentic performance. It is a way to make performance more radiant. It is a new, emerging way of harnessing the power of ancient wisdom in modern dramatic arts.
-
The beauty of this approach is that once you have digested it you can see it everywhere around you. People in the real world are all part of these four basic priorities in life.
Having this knowledge become intuitive and second nature for you gives you an edge over other actors in quickly analysing scene work, scripts, plays, story structures etc. so you can confidently make stronger choices that will organically resonate with the material.
In a way it makes creating meaningful acting choices within any material easier and quicker.
-
You can use it in your preparations for casting, where you often don´t receive very useful character descriptions from casting directors and all you get is one scene out of the whole screenplay or play.
How are you going to base your character building on that?
Well, with the 4POWERS you can quickly analyse the factual events of even the shortest scene and deduct the main priorities of your character in that scene.
Knowing more about the basic typology you have discovered, you can now more easily fill in the blanks about your character in an authentic way, based on knowledge and impulses the writer has most likely been informed by when writing your character.
